They Sure Know How to "Support the Troops"

From today's New York Times:
"A secret Pentagon study has found that at least 80 percent of the marines who have been killed in Iraq from wounds to their upper body could have survived if they had extra body armor. That armor has been available since 2003 but until recently the Pentagon has largely declined to supply it to troops despite calls from the field for additional protection, according to military officials."

Bull,

Funny thing...I was just reading that article.

Damn shame!

I remember sometime early last year (When I was still in College) reading an article about how the troops were requesting more armor and what not. I've said it before... we gotta get our president to start spending money on our own country!

I am not surprised. After 5 years in the Marines myself I can tell you that Uncle Sam could give a rats ass what happens to its troops as long as the objective is achieved. The money required for adequate armor was probably diverted into some frivolous covert operation in Iran. Or it was just never there in the first place.

It figures. The people who claim to be "supporting our troops" are more interested in tax cuts and expanding the Patriot Act. If the sons and daughters of our "leaders" were sent to Iraq, you can bet your ass they'd have the best body armour money can buy.

Just as bad as the tons of money wasted on the Bradley Armored Vehicle or the trillion dollars missing during Dov Zackheims, tenure as Pentagon comptroller---CBS News-SEPT 10TH 2001--AND THEN you know what happened to bury that story>

Gulf War I introduced Americans to 'low
cost' war for imperial adventurism. Now
Gulf War 2 ups the ante. An increase in cost, both financially and in troops lost. Too many signs of various types of friendly-fire incidents involving
mercenaries and other 'terrorists' on our own side. Gradually inuring Americans to ongoing military adventurism. Funds going to black-ops
programs softening up the next target,
new 911s providing justification, and the huge propaganda efforts. Much is made about 'greeting us with candy and flowers' but I find it hard to believe that anyone really expected that. These are VERY cynical people.
How often do you hear about the huge numbers of troops still sick and dying
from GWI?

No doubt. This is no way to live up to the meaningless Madison Avenue-esque slogan "support the troops." But sending them to fight illegal imperial wars doesn't help either. If these bastards wouldn't do that, they wouldn't have to worry about providing sufficient armor.
