Year 2007: President Condoleeza Rice?
Yesterday, U.S. News reported on the potentiality of a Cheney resignation. If Cheney resigns, pursuant to the 25th Amendment, President Bush would be authorized to nominate a new Vice President. U.S. News is reporting the likely candidate would be Condoleeza Rice. Now, I know we are getting far ahead of ourselves here, but this is a blog, so I'm allowed to get ahead. Thus....
Imagine Condi Rice becomes the new V.P. after Cheney resigns. Then in 2006, if present conditions remain or further deteriorate for the Republicans, it's certainly not unlikely that the Democrats would win back the House of Representatives. If that happens, it's rather certain that a Democratic House would move to impeach Bush immediately for the lies which took this country to war in Iraq.
Remember, by that time, Bush would be Roveless and Cheneyless-- perhaps sitting at a 30% approval rating....or worse! And much like President Nixon before him, it's certainly not hard to imagine that Bush would be forced into resignation.
Accordingly, Coni Rice would succeed Bush in the same fashion as unelected Vice President Gerald Ford succeeded Nixon in 1974 after the elected vice president, Spiro Agnew, resigned in 1973. Just like Gerald Ford, Condi Rice would become president without ever having been elected to any executive office!
Who knows....maybe she would nominate Colin Powell as her Vice President?
Imagine how pissed off the Republicans would be if two African-Americans were in office. They would lose their racist base overnight!
The amazing thing is, none of this is too far-fetched (except maybe the Colin Powell appointment).

Ive always said that the only way a woman will ever be President is if she is a Republican. However, I was hoping it could be someone I could actully admire.

To quote Chris Rock, "There will never be a black Vice-President."

Hmmm...If Cheney resigns very soon, and if Condi becomes VP, it may hurt Repubs enough among their base to sway a couple of close elections and win back the House. I think that is the weak point right now in your scenario--Dems winning enough seats in the House to have a majority. Even given all the trouble that the Repubs are having, it is very tough to beat an incumbant in the House. That and Colin Powell, which will never happen.

Shygetz,
I think you misunderstood the post. I said Repubs are already hurt enough to lose the House in 2006. Early polls already indicate this. If anything, I foresee things only deteriorating for Repubs-- especially if Fitzgerald hands down indictments to White House folk.

I would like to see Rice to finish the term instead of Bush. Unfortunately, I don't think it will happen. But very nice idea, anyway!

Just a slight correction. Ford was House Minority Leader before becoming Vice President, so he had been elected to office many times.

Zataod,
It says "without having been elected to any executive office". Although it only says "executive" now because I just changed it! Thanks for forcing me to be a tad more specific.

It's amazing to me how much the Republican party has changed since the days of Ford. Back then, there was still a liberal wing of the Republican party.

I wonder if Rove planned all of this out. You have to remember that these guys are masters at the chess game.
Will 2008 will be President Rice & Powell vs. Hillary & Lieberman?
I hope it happens. It would make the 2008 election season interesting!

WOW, how you guys can keep a straight face believing this junk is beyond me. The funniest part is that you continally miss the set-up, and then wonder why you lose.

I see goose-stepping' OTTMANN has been here.
I doubt that Condoleeza could win the WH. The reason I mention that is because that is what conservatives are hoping is that she will run against Hillary in 2008. I hate to tell conservatives but Hillary is far more popular among women, liberals, moderates and minorities than Condi. This has nothing to do with her being a Democrat or Condi's being a Republican. Voters just happen to realize that Hillary and Bill's policies led them to prosperity while those of Condi and her boss have led them down bankruptcy road and into a world where government policies are decided by the Iraq war, not the needs of the people. No, my conservative friends, Condi probably wouldn't win against Hillary. I don't want Hillary in the WH but I have to admit, she has a HECK of a chance at winning.

Here's how.
1) Cheney is indicted on Fitzmas and shamed into resigning.
2) Rice is quickly confirmed as vice president. (Note that this idea is has been put forth already by right wing pundits)
3) Plummeting poll numbers and constant criticism over the scandal cause Bush to hit the sauce again. (There are rumors of this already happening)
4) Bush is removed from office not by impeachment but by Article 4 of the 25th Amendment to the Constitution! (Maybe unlikely but POSSIBLE especially given step 3)
5) Rice is sworn in as President of the United States!
She has already been put out there as a viable candidate for President in 2008 by the pundits.... Maybe in anticipation of this possibility.. hmm.
