Neocons in Space
The RAD states, inter alia:
"The ability to have access to, operate in, and dominate the aerospace environment has become the key to military success in modern, high-technology warfare. . . . How well the Air Force rises to the many challenges it faces – even should it receive increased budgets – will go far toward determining whether US military forces retain the combat edge they now enjoy" (pp. 38–39).Accordingly, ten days ago the U.S. launched "an electronic-warfare unit capable of jamming enemy satellites."
"As Space Command also recognizes, the United States must also have the capability to deny America's adversaries the use of commercial space platforms for military purposes in times of crises and conflicts. Indeed, space is likely to become the new 'international commons', where commercial and security interests are intertwined and related. (Pp. 54–55). (Emhasis Added.)
So it seems that we are weaponizing space. What an absolute shame. To think, space could be the place of our greatest dreams, yet although it's still early, it seems space is destined to be the place for more of our earth-born nightmares.

Seems goofy, but it looks as though space will continue be explored by individual nations. I suppose China, Japan, Russia, U.S. and E.U. will divy up Mars mining. "Welcome to New America, Mars capital of the American Territory on Mars". hmm

Considering how our government cant seem to accomplish anything without costing us a fortune, maybe they wont figure out how to do this. The last fronteer could become crowded with gun slingers.

Sorry to tell you, but this is not new. I guarantee you that electronic warfare units to jam satellites have been around since the 80s. The Soviets (now the Russians) regularly and still do "paint" our satellites with jamming signals and laser flashes just to mess with us. We've been playing that little game for around 20 years, and we didn't start it.
So no, WE are not "weaponizing" space, it already is and has been. And the Soviets started the process, not us.

it's all about absolute power and control... controlling the "commons" and space is megalomaniacal enough but i am getting more and more concerned with bush's push to deploy the military on domestic soil... he's at it again today, this time suggesting they be used to enforce quarantine in an avian flu epidemic...

Technology holds the promise to solve so many of our most pressing issues. To read how space exploration could be transformed in the next few decades check out this article: A hoist to the heavens
In so many ways, the most encouraging and optimistic article I have read in some time.

BOOZE FOR BUSH
Hey, here's an idea: if everyone that reads blogs like this one sends a gift-wrapped bottle of Thunderbird, or Night Train, or Boone's Farm to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, we could have thousands--no millions-- of bottles of wino wine piling up at his front door!
Propogate the meme throughout the sphere!

Or wrap it up yourself.

Space exploration tickles the imaginations and extends the knowledge base of humanity, but whether we need to be spending so much money in this area when we have so many troubles here at home and abroad is questionable.
I'd rather turn space exploration over to an international cooperative body that could regulate human efforts in space while creating fair standards for the commercial uses of our near outer atmosphere.

The only good news is that weaponizing space may finally get the aliens to notice us and come down here and slap some sense into people. Or I guess they could eat us.
